What Makes a Great Manager?

A great manager is created. Having effective leadership in a company is vital to operations and growth.

The best manager understands that if she is to move the team forward she must also contribute.

The best position for running a team is to run it as efficiently as possible.

This will result in greater productivity for the company with more rewards and possibly crystal awards being given to the best managers in each department.

1. Caring

Managers do not have to run their team with an iron fist. Being caring and learning to know more about the individuals can go a long way. When a manager is genuinely interested in a team member, then success is near.

Caring about the team’s individual well-being with checking in and how they are doing at work and outside of work could be great to learn of how a person works best. Learning this can only be better for the company overall.

2. Coaching

Developing people should be at the center of getting the job done. Having one on one meetings with individuals and encouraging them to present their take on solutions to problems is a good approach. Instead of solving the problems for the team, the team solves their own problems with more communication.

3. Communication

Allowing time for others to speak is equally as important as talking. What is happening within the organization? What changes can the team look forward to?

A great manager communicates and let’s this information be known while also taking the time to listen.

4. Development

Everyone needs development. Taking an interest in an employee to make certain they are using their full talents is a good step in the right direction.

Take a look at their long-term career aspirations, then assist then in the possible paths that they could go. Growing within the company makes for a loyal employee who will benefit the company.

5. Emotionally Intelligent

A manager that is visibly upset at a meeting has let his team down and has allowed his emotions to get in the way of being productive. Be aware of your emotions. Be able to bounce back from challenges and come up with a solution. The behavior of the manager affects the team.

Remaining calm and coping under pressure, then coping with the change can lead to a victorious moment for the company. Find other ways to deal with stress.

6. Treatment is Fair

Fair treatment will be respected on any team. Keep in mind the team’s abilities to perform instead of setting such hard to reach goals.

Encourage the team with realistic goals and keep in mind what each individual has to offer in order to reach the goal.

Diversity is key in order to gain insight on many perspectives. We never know where the answer may be.

7. Be Innovative

A great manager helps the team to make decisions on their own. Learning from failure can help the team to get through what went wrong instead of being lectured on how they did something wrong. Micromanagement only smothers people.

8. Results Oriented

Performance standards are encouraged and maintained on a team with a great manager. Team members feel empowered and even share when there are issues that are blocking the ability to improve.

With a great manager, team meetings are productive and the team feels ready to take on the task at hand.

Being an individual on the team and then being a manager is indeed two very different types of positions. More is expected of a manager as the person leads a team towards the company’s goals.

In order for this type of position to be effective, the manager must also realize that they too need leadership and training.

Without having guidance, a manager will be left to figure things out. Each manager has a manager and the same traits are needed in order to lead a great manager.

When a manager is left to figure things out, this can take a toll on the team overall. It is much easier to give managers the toolbox they need to be effective.
